Literacy is one of the most important aspects of a student's learning when they are in elementary school, as it prepares them to interact and learn in all situations going forward in life and in school. Our literacy approach is to ensure students are exposed to and interact with rigorous, grade level text and tasks that meet the expectations of the Common Core State Standards. We then work with students in small groups, organized by students' specific reading level, focusing on the word work and comprehension particular to each reading level. Finally, students must also engage in writing, both for its own sake as well as writing in response to reading texts—this begins as early as kindergarten!
Starting in 2015-16, we will be working with the Benchmark Reading program
in grades K-3, in English and Spanish (for our ELA S classrooms). In Grades 4 and 5, we will use Engage NY
. You can read more about each program by clicking on the program names.
